~the brilliance in being rational~

....just came home from seeing 'Religulous' at the Angelika tonight and I highly recommend it.

Bill Maher has done his homework and really knows what he is talking about. He has studied every religion, scripture, etc- to effectively construct his opinion that makes the overall argument for his documentary. In fact, he usually knows more about a religion than its fundamentalists whom he is questioning. Most of these fundamentalists do not even have the valid information about that (whether it be another religion, lifestyle, belief or group of people, etc) which they are so passionately fighting against. I cant imagine putting my life on the line or imposing harm to others so blindly. Personally, I value religion as a personal cultural history that has shaped my family's customs/ traditions and overall values. Meaning, its cool that a religious holiday will bring my extended family together a few times a year to catch up w/ one another and preserve a tradition.... such as lighting my great great grandmother's candlesticks (you get the idea). However, I could never understand imposing that personal family value on anyone else.... let alone the integration of religion in politics. Its funny how many of the extreme religious fundamentalists in the US were ex-drug addicts. In the documentary, these fundamentalists were always arguing/ swapping an extreme life of sex & drugs for one of religious purpose.... as if there is no variation of life in between. What would happen if that extreme dedication went into something useful that actually made progress? These people never talk about love or reflect any value in real human relationships. Maybe it's because they are not fortunate to have that kind of love? In that case, I think that art and music can be some of the most valid religions that actually bring people of all different beliefs, nationalities, etc together. Anyways, Maher's monologue in the final scene was incredible!
